“No child but must remember laying his head in the grass, staring into the infinitesimal forest and seeing it grow populous with fairy armies.” ~Robert Louis Stevenson, Essays in The Art of Writing~
I can’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t fascinated with Faeries (or “the fair folk, and “good neighbors” are a few names that they like to be addressed by.) It’s as if, when I was immediately born my mother used to fill my head and heart with stories of the Fae. She even used to refer to me as a “changeling” which used to cause me immeasurable pain, as I was already considered odd and yes, “fae like” when I started elementary school.
But it was just a matter of time before I was proud to be a changeling but always felt incredibly wistful, that somehow I was left behind with human parents, who could never truly love me as my family the Fae did, that I believed in.
As a little girl, my mother and I would leave offerings of honey, milk, and other assorted Fae delights outside on full moons. I always wanted a special Fae house though, that I could peek into and commune with the Fae. I got the idea from one of my favorite books, “Peter Pan” who’s companion, Wendy, had a special “Wendy House” built just for her.
It just happened that the “Wendy” from “Peter Pan” also loved the Fae and all things magickal. Being a Wendy, myself, I was convinced that I was supposed to honor the fae and build them their own house. And so on this last Beltane (a sabbat known where the Fae world is open to humans), I decided it was time to build a special little house for them outside in my garden.
Being the perfectionist that I am, I knew I had to research about what they liked, and the perfect way to construct a place for them. Of course, the Fae don’t believe in “perfection, ” (most of them), they just like to be invited into your life and admired and revered.
(Warning though; not all of the Fae are friendly and if you’re going to be building a house, altar or perform magickal workings with them, take caution and ask which ever deity, higher power, etc…that only the Fae who are known to have good will and are helpful to humans enter your life. You can read my post about the “darker faes” here.)
The first book I found which inspired me to make my own Fae house was, “Fairy Houses….Everywhere!“ If you love to peek into the world of the Fae and all the different dwellings that people have constructed for them, then definitely check this book out. Whether you’re an “adult” or a child, I know you’ll love this book.
I decided on this last Beltane, that I was going to build their house in my backyard. I’m not crafty or clever with my hands in the traditional way, so I looked on Etsy, for Fae Furniture and trinkets, which I’ll show you below.
The first part of this, was choosing the perfect location for their dwelling and believe me, I spend quite a while pondering this. I decided on my beautiful Lavender bush because I know that the Fae love flowers of every type, especially Lavender. It also attracts lots of honey bees, which are the kin and helpers to the Fae. It also offers privacy and amenities which are ideal for demanding Fae’s.

Being the curious creature that a cat can be, Miss Bella had to investigate what exactly I was doing as I was bending down and peering into the bush. It was then that she gave her approval and then told me that yes, this was the perfect spot for a Fae house.

Now that the purrfect location was selected, I set up the living quarters with whimsical little Fae furniture…

I set everything up and a minute later, the little table was knocked over, which you can see, if you look closely, which indicated to me, that immediately the Fae were busy house cleaning..

I found this wonderful little table and chair set here and the little mushroom stands here…
I have my own leisurely out door chair which I adore, so I knew they would probably love one to. I love this Etsy shop where I found this chair.
Knowing how much the Fae’s insist on privacy, I added this little house for them that I found here.
And the final Pièce de résistance for the Fae, is this little offering bowl I also found on Etsy. I like to leave some Lavender Honey for them once a week and especially on Sabbats.
And I must say that since I created this little house for them, very special magical occurrences have been happening in my life.
So, how does one entice the Fae into your life with charms and spells? I know that most of you know Lyn, from her blog, “Witch Blog,” who’s wisdom and magick continues to amaze me. Did you also know that she and her husband, Paul, who’s also walks the magickal path, have a website, “Exclusive Magick“?
You can join as a member for a ridiculously affordable small fee that gives you access to some of the most wonderful practical magick knowledge around. I just found out about their site and have been madly copying down tons of material for my own Book of Shadows.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my little tour of my Fae house and I would love to know how you invite the Fae into your life and your experiences with them!
“This is a work of fiction. All the characters in it, human and otherwise, are imaginary, excepting only certain of the fairy folk, whom it might be unwise to offend by casting doubts on their existence. Or lack thereof.” ~Neil Gaiman~

Oh, that wee furniture and blessing bowl are the cutest things I’ve seen in a long time! I know the fae will adore them, and you!
I’m still waiting for my Fae godmother to show up and say “Oh Wendy, you wonderful wonderful person…Because you made such a beautiful place for all us lovely happy winged ones, I will grant you three wishes…” Um, NOT! lol…But, hopefully you’re right, Debra that the Fae do adore me : )
I’ve seen that book at my local Witch shop…took the time to flip through it and instantly fell in love. I’ve always wanted to make a house for the Fae….but with me living in an apartment with little outdoor space it just never felt right. I’m working on making my balcony a place where I can hang out….maybe I’ll look into making a Fae house out there this year. By the Summer Solstice at least…yes, that sounds right
Don’t let apartment living stop you from having a fae sanctuary. You can make a little altar with a houseplant and still get some cute furniture, accessories and a little offering bowl. I think a tea cup would be wonderful and I bet the fae would love it. And when you do make your balcony fae place, I would love to see it. So, please let me know if you post photos : )
How absolutely adorable….so glad to hear that the Faerie have accepted your invitation:)
How lovely! I’m sure that the Fae will accept your invitation. From what you experienced, they are already likely there.
Forgot to add, tonight will be the best moment of the year to interact with the Fae until astrological Samhein. It’s the astrological moment of Beltane at about 4:30 PM.
Vivienne, you always come up with the best astro. information. Last night I was having the wildest dreams, kind of felt like I was in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” but thankfully I didn’t wake up to some ass, errrr…I mean Donkey eared man next to me. I would love to know more about the timing and astro. influences that we can all work with the fae, hint-hint ; )
Oooohhhhhh!! I so love the furniture! I just know how happy your Fae!!! :0)
And Thank You ever so much for the links! I’m off to check them out…….
I bet you would make an awesome, awesome fae hang out, Jeanne! You’re so incredibly creative and your art would be wonderful to use. Perhaps you’ll consider some spooky/Samhain Fae goodies in your Etsy shop?
Such a cool idea! We have a house Brownie, I wonder what he would think of the wild folk in our yard…..
Oh, a house brownie! I wish I had one. They’re much nicer and friendlier than the fae can be, even though they’re relatives. And I know that brownies esp. love kitties, even if they’re from hell ; )

Your little Fae house totally lured me in with it’s charm, as well as your story did!
When I was little I used to imagine little pieces of furniture for squirrels, etc, maybe the Fae were communicating with me and I didn’t know it? I don’t see how the Fae could resist the precious living quarters you made for them. Your kitty loved it too! Also…I was so happy when I saw the quote by Robert Louis Stevenson…his poems were childhood favorites!
Hi Caren,
You definitely were touched by the fae when you were little to have such wonderful imagination and your connections with squirrels. Have you ever read the story “Squirrel Nutkin” by Beatix Potter? You must read it, if you haven’t. Perhaps, the squirrel is one of your animal spirit guides. They make me laugh so much when they’re nattering away and my cats go crazy. And I also loved R.L.S when I was little…I still do : )
Oh what a delightful offering for the fae. You did good. I’m sure they will have a magickal time in your rosemary haven all set up for them.
I have always called GK a geffling with her pointy ears and old soul ways. When she was wee one (about 20 months) she told me about flyng up in the sky with the bees. I mean this was out of nowhere. I was in awe of her anyway but I was blown away at that point. Ever since she has taken time to be “alone” in the garden with the turtles, the insects, the plants and beloved fae. I started to take some pictures of what the faery garden looks like right now but GK insisted if I did they (the fae) would be unhappy with me….so no photos here. I trust GK when it comes to all things faery.
Have a super weekend…..
GK is so beautiful…I loved your birthday tribute to her. I have a dream about having a little grand daughter like her one day. She’s one of your soul mates, Linda! Have I told you I’m moving to N.M. within the next four years? It’s funny because ever since I build my fae sanctuary, I’ve had the strongest visions of how to actually get there and what my little casita will look like. I’ll send you some links in an email to help you out with your doggie and the terror terrier ways ; )
Dear Wendy!!! How beautiful your little fae dwelling is. You did a fabulous job in helping to decorate it for your faerie friends. I am sure they are most appreciative of their new abode.
I love that book, as well. Maybe this summer I will have time to create a little dwelling – out in my special flower garden.
Thank you for sharing this beauty!!!! xoxo Theresa
I would love to see a fae sanctuary you create, Theresa! I’m hinting to all my Etsy Artist friends to make some fae accessories : )
Wendy, your little houses are amazing!! You’ve inspired me to get making a fae house too. We used to have one at our old house but we never made one here. Think it’s time to put that right
And thank you, as always, for your very lovely comments.
Oh, I bet Tabitha would love her own little faery village. If you make one, I’m going to bring some American Faeries over to see you ; )
How wonderful to build a fairie house!! Naturally, Miss Bella would know the proper place
It looks so nice
