Jack: “Greg, how come you don’t like cats?”
Greg: “I don’t not like cats I just, I just prefer dogs. I mean I’m just more of a dog kind of, you know – come home, they’re wagging their little tails, happy to see you.”
Jack: “So you need that assurance do you? You prefer an emotionally shallow animal?”
Greg: “I…”
Jack: “You see Greg, when you yell at a dog, his tail will go between his legs and cover his genitals, his ears will go down. A dog is very easy to break, but cats make you work for their affection, they don’t sell out the way dogs do.”
Greg: “…Huh.”
(Quote from movie “Meet the Parents“)
I love men who love cats…No, that’s not a t-shirt saying or some new commercial slogan, it’s a simple fact that men who love cats, are a turn on for me. Sure, it’s easy for most men to love dogs, I mean you don’t hear about “Crazy Cat Men” but lately everywhere I look there are t.v. shows, movies and blogs galore about men who love cats. From what I’ve been reading and know from my own personal experiences, it takes a confident, secure, intuitive and extraordinary man to be proud of the fact that they love cats.
I mean where did this ridiculous stereotype start that men aren’t supposed to love cats? Is it because our culture has been so enmeshed in the ridiculous and limiting view that “true men” love dogs, while only women are supposed to love cats? One blog that has photos of men and their cats is “Cute Boys with Cats.” (I know it says “boys” which is a mere technicality in my eyes, boys or men, this blog is for those of us who like our men who are “ailurophiles.”
Laura, who is the creator of the “Cute Boys who love Cats” blog ,was being interviewed and had this to say when asked “why do cats seem more of a girl thing?” as opposed to men loving cats:
“I’m not quite sure where the stigma came from. Maybe it’s the idea of feline being a feminine trait. Any man who thinks he’s to ‘manly’ to own a cat probably wouldn’t get along with me, and vice-versa. This kind of reminds me of the phenomenon of men who think they have to drive very loud, obnoxious trucks, but I’m just speculating here.”
I couldn’t have said it any better…
I’m going to list my top five famous cat lovers who are yes, men…I dare anyone to tell me that these men are wimpy (whatever that means), or are in any way not worthy of a cats admiration.
1) James Dean…one of my very favorite actors, who exemplified “cool,” charisma, talent and an undeniable sexual appeal, had a cat named “Marcus” who was a present from the actress, Elizabeth Taylor. The night before he was killed in a car crash, he left a note to a friend who was taking care of his cat reminding her to pick up Marcus’ favorite cat food.
2) My favorite American president, Abraham Lincoln, pictured here with his cat “Dixie” was famous for his love of cats.
“While Lincoln was in office, his wife, Mary Todd, was asked by a reporter if her husband had any hobbies. She promptly replied that the President was very fond of cats. Another incident which made Lincoln respected and loved by animal lovers was when Lincoln stumbled upon three kittens that were homeless and orphaned during the Civil War. He found them in a telegraph hut, and started asking the locals about their mother but when he was told that the mother cat had died he took it upon himself to find the kittens a good home.” (Quote taken from website “History King“)
3) Witty, outspoken, brilliant and definite cat lover, the author Mark Twain said this about cats;
“Some people scorn a cat and think it not an essential; but the Clemens tribe are not of these.”
- quoted in “UC’s Bancroft Library celebrating Mark Twain,” San Francisco Chronicle, Oct. 2, 2008
“When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction.”
- “An Incident,” Who Is Mark Twain?
4) Musician John Lennon, often said that cats were one of his greatest inspirations for the music he created. He grew up with cats, almost as if they were his siblings and up until the day he died, was owned by at least one cat.

5) When I first saw this actor, James Franco on the television show “Freaks and Geeks” I was instantly smitten. Marco, is MY idea of the perfect “cat man,” sensitive, funny, talented, quirky and sexy as all hell! Have you ever seen his portrayal of James Dean in the made for television movie? Amazing and mesmerizing…
So there you have it, my top five famous cat men. Men who love cats is a topic that my “girls” (Miss Bella and Sele) and I never get tired of and we’re as happy as a kitty high on catnip when we think about men who love cats.
What are your thoughts about men who love cats, nay or yay? Do you have any men in your life who love cats or are there any famous men you like who are cat lovers? OR better yet, are you a man who loves cats? Please do tell, as I’m curious as a well, you know what…(I used to hate that saying “curiosity killed the cat” until my mother told me a better add on for the saying, “Curiosity may have killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back…”)
I’ll leave you with one of my favorite videos demonstrating “real” men who love cats. They’re not actors or known for anything famous they’ve done, EXCEPT how they love cats.

As you know I breed cats. It warms my heart to see these BIg men come here to pick their kitten. They are wonderful owners.
My husband & his friend are both men men & they are real cat lovers.
I also sadly admit it I find cats prefer men.

I would love to see you take some photos of the men who come to pick up your kittens, if they would allow it, Leanne! That’s what makes me smile. You’re like the second person who’s told me that cats prefer men. Huh…I don’t know if my cats would agree with that ; ) but certainly a few cats that have owned me, have definitely loved my son more than me.
Any person, male or female, who loves cats immediately demonstrates their superior qualities as a human being, in my eyes! And I love those yodeling cats too!
Debra She Who Seeks recently posted..The Cure for Spiritual Doubt
I think HRH would agree with you that only those who are superior adore cats and are owned by them like you and I. You know the old saying “Cats were once worshiped as Gods in Egypt and they’ve never forgotten this” ; )
Well, although I like men who like animals because it shows kindness and sensitivity (and also I love animals) if I am to be truthful, I’d have to say that in my personal experience I’ve found that the most manly men prefer dogs. In my experience again, the cat men were just a little too in touch with their feminine side (for me.) But that really doesn’t mean it’s true for all cat loving men. I think that the dog thing and guys is probably just because the dog’s pack nature is similar to the guy code thing, not to mention that dogs almost always designate the man in the house as the “pack leader,” even if it’s the female who tends to the dog the most. So yes, I agree that the stigma attached to cat-loving men has something to do with a cat being more feminine (as they are not pack animals) and that’s why men who are cat lovers often keep this fact about them a secret. But men who love animals are most often good men, unless they love animals more than people and I’ve experienced that too – but that’s another story for another day…..
Aine recently posted..All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned From Moving
I think you’re right, Aine in the fact that it used to be all to feminine men liked cats more than women, but I think that’s changing. You’d be surprised about all the “macho” men I know who actually like cats more than dogs. I think that a man who’s more in touch with his anima likes cats more. That being said, I went on a blind date with a man who ONLY liked cats and not dogs. He was definitely too weird for me. But, he was fully hetero. and I wouldn’t consider him feminine in any way. And if a man doesn’t like animals at all, I run. I have to admit, I’m one of those who prefer my animals to most people, but not to the extreme ; )
Well I love men who love cats too. My Man Mr H is a cat lover, actually to be correct he is a bit of a cat whisperer. Any cat who ‘hates everyone’ will come willingly to Mr H!
I love James Dean, actually Mr H, has a bit of a James Dean look…
Anyhow, Dixie, looks like an Egyptian Mau, a rather rare and very beautiful breed, I am a cat lover and so is my man, we have a beautiful cat named Sherie who would like to say greetings To Stele & Miss Bella!
A cat whisperer who has shades of J. Dean???? Wow, you are one smart cookie to choose a man like that, Faerie Sage ; ) I know Egyptian Mau cats and you’re absolutely right, that “Dixie” does look like one. I would love to see a photo of Sherie and the girls send warm purrs back to her.
My Hubby is a “Cat Man”. We wouldn’t be together if he wasn’t. Men (and Women) who don’t like cats don’t last long around our place.
I agree with you – it takes a confident, secure man to love a cat. :0) And I think a “Cat Man” is sexy! :0)
Jeanne Gripp recently posted..Fascinated with Fascinators
Oh, forget it if a person didn’t like cats! My mother used to say, “never trust a man who doesn’t like cats as that says he’s not comfortable with “the” feminine,” which is totally opposite than a man who IS just feminine. I told Faerie Sage and Leanne who left comments, that I would love to see a photo of their men and cats, do you think you could perhaps persuade hubby to pose with Gomez? AND I think it takes a smart woman to choose a cat man too ; )
I love men who love cats, too. I have a dear friend whom all my 6 cats like and especially Tylle (my Maine Coon) is close with him. Wonderful to see how the cats snuggle up around us when we sit in my “cozy corner” watching movies

Hi Tenna, : )
I’m so glad you stopped by my blog, it’s nice to meet you. How wonderful that you have six wonderful kitties! I’m going to have to look through your blog to meet them. And here again, I’m asking people who have “cat men” in their lives if they could take a photo of them. The image of your friend snuggling with you and your babies in your “cozy corner” makes me smile…
My Sweet Man tolerates cats…….except…every cat we have ever had has been his. Now how does that work? The Olde Bagg
Oh he “tolerates” cats, Linda? LOL…I think he’s trying to fool you. I read a really interesting article one time that said that the reason cats seem to be drawn to people who are either allergic to them, dislike them or heaven forbid, “tolerate” them, is because those people aren’t as quick to grab cats which they naturally abhor. I can see that, when my cats are drawn to people who come into my house and aren’t as comfortable with my girls and they walk right up to them, rather than my friends who love cats and go out of their way to draw my cats to them. Another case where most women are more cat-like than dog-like, WE need our space and have to decide who we like as opposed to most dogs who love everyone ; )
Loved that last post. My husband loves cats and it was him that introduced me to them as i had a phobia about them for years. Our girl cat, Lucy has him firmly wrapped around her paw and he likes them so much we are currently looking for another little girl kitten.
I dont see it matters what sex you are, if you love cats then i like you.

That’s really interesting Gill that your hubby was the one who brought you into the cat world. Usually, it’s the other way around. I think that a lot of people are like you used to be and perhaps had a bad experience with them or don’t know how loving cats can be. And I’m like you, if you’re a cat lover, than you’re someone I want to know : ) I’m so glad you stopped by my blog and said “hi.”
What a fabulous post!!! I was happy to see your choices for men who love cats. Having visited the Mark Twain House often, I knew of his great love for cats. I think men who love cats ROCK. My hubby had never owned a cat before we met, but he fell in love with Patches (they bonded over a can of tuna!) and then our sweet Jazzy. He took it just as hard as I did when they both passed from this realm. Animals are drawn to him.
Theresa
I would love to see the Twain house, I heard it’s gorgeous! HOW cute that your hubby and Patches came to lovely understanding of each other over tuna, that makes me laugh : )
I knew two very lovely human owners by the names of Merlin & Taunia. Sadly, the died last year. However, they truly loved my husband.

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss of your kitties, Naila : ( Perhaps you’ll be owned by other kitties some day that your husband may find…
I have several pics of Hubby with Gomez.
Gomez has been after me to let him write a post for Mondays on my blog. He has been most insistent since he saw the little brother of a friend of his writing the Monday posts for her blog. (I think the ego was showing…)
So check my blog next Monday for pics and Gomez’s first writing experience. :0)

We’s CAN’T wait, Gomez to see youze blog! Our mom gets so tired of reading blogs sometimes that are just about silly humans, so she loves to spend time purrruzing (get it, huh, huh? ) the whole kitty blogosphere. She’s even found two blog hops for us kitties and some doggies that happen every week. So, we’ll be sure to stop by and say “hi.”
Miss Bella and Sele
Love, love, love those photos of hot cat loving men. I had to laugh because my husband professes not to like cats at all. But when we brought home our rescued kitty, he was the one who went out the next day and spent $30 buying her kibble, cute food dishes and a mat to put them on. He still claims not to like the “stupid” cat, but she adores him, and the whole family calls her his girlfriend, because he is the only one who can make her come when called, and she sleeps at the foot of our bed, because he is there. If we come home, and he is not expecting us, we can catch him with the cat on his lap occasionally without his gruff exterior in place.
Hi Beka,
It’s so funny how I hear so many stories about men who don’t like cats, (usually because they’ve never been owned by one) and then the cat and them end up bonding the most. I visited your blog and loved it! I love retro./vintage treats and went to your Etsy shop. I’m in trouble ; ) Thanks so much for stopping on by and saying “hi.”
I loved your post Beka – I have been partners with my husband for nearly 30 years – only now have we realised there is a fundamental difference between us in that he is a “dog” person and I am a “cat” – he loves the whole dog rushing up to him when he comes in – he needs that reassurance – I prefer it when the cats deign to come and rub round my legs. I have two wonderful kids – a daughter 20 who is a horse person – and a son 17 who is becoming a cat person – what a delight. At such an early age – he “gets” cats! My work here is done! lol!
