Hi Witch’s and Wizards who have flown over from Mrs. B’s! And of course big “hello’s” to the people who already read my blog and for some strange reason keep coming back for more; ) My name is Wendy, like the ”good little witch” from “Casper,” except I like what Mae West said, “When I’m good, I’m good…but when I’m bad, I’m better.” That’s me in a nutshell.

casper and wendy 200x143 Oh mom, PLEASE dont make me wear that for Halloween!

Definitely NOT me!

Please pull up a seat, look around the blog, and settle down as I tell you a story so you can get to know me a little better.

O.k. raise your hand if your mother made you dress up in a Halloween costume you either hated or felt embarrassed in! <raising hand and waving madly>. This is the story of the Halloween I’m fated to remember for the rest of my life and cringe every time I think about it. I’ve blogged about my mother continuously on this blog and eWitch and usually I’ve shared the wonderful and magickal gifts I inherited from her. However, she was extremely narcissistic. I’m not trying to bash her, I’m just stating the facts. My mother basically wanted a daughter who would think like her, look like her, dress the way she wanted and agree with everything she said.

motherDaughterAprons 121x200 Oh mom, PLEASE dont make me wear that for Halloween!

Wasn't going to happen!

Now, on Halloween my mother always bought me the most beautiful costumes to wear which I usually loved and notice I said, “usually.” But, when I was in third grade at Pinecrest Elementary School, an alien life-force invaded my mother and stole all her good taste.

Alien Taking Over My Mom

Let set me the scene for you. We all have “Tiffany’s” in our life, and I’m not talking about the “Holly Golightly” jewelry type of store, I’m talking about the girl you love to hate who has everything you don’t and you want to kill her. Tiffany, was my arch-nemisis all during my elementary school years. She had long blonde hair and blue eyes that batted these really long lashes at all the boys who droned around her like bees to a flower. I on the other hand, wasn’t ugly, but I was a tomboy.  And the boys in my grade all wanted to play handball with me because I loved sports which always left me feeling like the odd “Barbie-doll” out, because I wasn’t a Tiffany. And yes, that was her real name.

barbie+doll 200x200 Oh mom, PLEASE dont make me wear that for Halloween!

Barbie Doll "Tiffany"

On Halloween, our school would torture us by making us parade all around the school grounds so the teachers and parents could coo over us and pat themselves on the back because their children looked so darling. Ugh! My mother loved dolls which I hated. Why she wanted to humiliate me by dressing me up as the ugliest doll possible; Raggedy Ann is beyond my comprehension. I begged and pleaded with my mother, not to make me wear this ridiculous costume. But, I was told, if I didn’t wear it to school, I would not be allowed to go trick or treating that year AND I still had to wear the same costume, sigh….

Forcing a smile while I'm secretly plotting revenge

I remember that morning going to school with this huge lump of lead in my stomach because everyone would laugh at how funny I looked in my Halloween costume. I get to school and wanted to stay in the bathroom all day. And of course the first person I see is Tiffany who gets out of her parents car wearing this pink, sparkly Faery-Princess costume. She looked perfect and well, pink. I wish I had a picture of her, but you can use your imagination. As you can see from the photo’s I was not pretty and pink, I was glaringly bright fluorescent orange! I knew the day was going to suck big time. And of course the inevitable happened, all the kids in my class laughed at me, just like I predicted. Don’t you just love how kind children can be? I had to suck it up and was told to get ready for the big parade. Oh boy, Happy Happy Joy Joy!

Walk of Shame 400x255 Oh mom, PLEASE dont make me wear that for Halloween!

My Halloween Walk of Shame

Tiffany of course, had all the boys swooning over her, I mean this literally, and asking her if she would marry them. In third grade! I told myself I would turn out like a mean, ugly Old Maid who looked just like the one from the playing cards. (The ”Old Maid” photo I’m showing is not the one I grew up with. This one looks happy with her cat, hmmmm, looks familiar.)

Old Maid Oh mom, PLEASE dont make me wear that for Halloween!

Destined to be my fate, because I wasn't "Tiffany"

The rest of the day and that whole Halloween is a blur which I think I’ve purposely drowned out to save me from being further traumatized.

Are you kidding me 400x394 Oh mom, PLEASE dont make me wear that for Halloween!

Are you kidding me?

I would have liked to tell you that I won all the boys over on my side back from Tiffany the fair princess, but life’s not a fairy tale. Although, one of my favorite movies in the world is “Sixteen Candles” because Molly Ringwald kind of looked like a cute version of Raggedy Ann AND got the gorgeous guy! I did get a very small revenge though on Tiffany. Not one I created out of spite, but let’s just say that divine intervention does come into play once in a while and gives us a small patch of sunshine on a dark and stormy day. That little victory I’ll save for another post.

Black Cat vs Catwoman Temple 400x257 Oh mom, PLEASE dont make me wear that for Halloween!

Take THAT, Tiffany!

I guess the moral of this story is…laugh! I can laugh about it now, because we’ve all had those moments or days as a child when we wanted to crawl under a rock and somehow have managed to come out alive on the other side with a whacky sense of humour. While Halloween/Samhain does have a very serious and spiritual aspect to it, it’s also supposed to be about fun and getting wild. I was invited to go to a costume party for Halloween this year, (which I doubt I’ll go to) but if I DO go, I found the perfect costume for me. Yes mom, your little girl has grown up and this time, I’m choosing the costume…

Am I a crazy cat lady? I'm an introvert in the "real" world but I love meeting new friends especially in the blogosphere where I've been blessed to meet many of you. Please introduce yourself if you'd like so that we can get to know each other better, especially if you have a blog that I can visit. Oh Goddess! I feel for you with this one! I dont ever remember being forced to wear a specific costume we always go to choose, probably because we made them ourselves! My most memorable costume would have to be when I was about the same age as your ‘precious doll’. I wanted to be a bat. Yep a bat. I begged and pleaded and since I never ever remember buying a full costume (just pieces here & there), my father set about making me a full set of functioning bat wings! I think dad had as much fun with this costume as I did! I was dressed all in black with pointy bat ears and full under arm wings, every adult seemed to think I was a cat but oh well I loved my bat costume all the same.

Faerie Sage, a Bat is so cool! I think I”m going to have to have all of us post photos of our Halloween as children for next Halloween. I bet you looked so cute. Have you ever read the children’s story book “Stella Luna”? She was the cutest bat I’ve ever seen. Actually as an adult dressing up as a bat would be pretty cool too! And I love that your father got into spirit and what was up with people thinking a bat is a cat? kind of ignorant on their part!? Doh! One has whiskers and doesn’t fly! ; )

I would have considered the Raggedy Ann outfit a step up from my least favorite costume. My mom was a school librarian and at the time all the faculty would dress up and go from room to room. One year the art teacher made these big, ugly paper mache heads…newspaper hair, construction paper eyelashes, enormous sparkly red lips, greenish complection. Well, good old Mom decided it would be the perfect thing for 6-year-old me to wear in the town Halloween parade. It was so big on me it came down over my shoulders and I couldn’t see out the eye holes at all. She dressed me in a tight bodysuit, mini skirt, and go-go boots…..and pinned inflated balloons under my shirt (at least they held the head up a little). I might not have known what the comments meant, but I sure do remember everyone pointing and laughing. And halfway thru the parade? One boob went flat. 8O

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Ace, why oh why do parents and teachers think they know what children should be for Halloween? I would have loved to have seen your costumes, LOL…I can just get a picture in my mind of your “60′s swinging outfit”! The balloon part is hilarious! It’s a good thing you weren’t a teen ager having to wear inflatable balloons and one of them deflating. Your costume sounds like it was a go-go dancer from Outer space. Hmmm, maybe alien life forms take over a lot of parents and teachers during Halloween!

  3. avatar Aine says:

You poor thing. Your face in the pics tells it all! I was also forced into “being” Raggedy Ann.” Wasn’t much of a stretch since I really was kind of Raggedy as all somewhat neglected kids are, but not to whine because everything turned out fine in the end. But wait, there’s more. The worst costume I was forced to wear ( and kind of inappropriate for a six year old) was a Geisha. I had no idea what that was, but for some odd reason the robe happened to be in the house and my older sister was a whiz at creating large hairstyles even on a wig. I remember they taught me how to walk using tiny steps. It’s so wrong I know. Families – you can’t pick ‘em.

I’d love to be included in the giveaway!

Maybe all of us Raggedy adults could dress as Halloween one year and take over the world . You have such a great attitude with what your childhood must have been like. A geisha, huh! I don’t think your family knew what a Geisha REALLY does. And yes, families we can’t pick them, but we can choose to ignore them.

  5. avatar Leathra says:

Lesse…I suppose my most memorable costume was this pretty (I thought so then, at least) pink poofy princess costume that my mom made for me. The condition was, however, that if she made me a pretty princess costume that I had to wear it two year in a row (’cause wearing it for two Halloweens means it gets the use sewing it herself deserves?) Of course the next year rolls around and I do NOT want to wear the same costume (my aversion to pink had developed) but if I didn’t wear the costume it meant I wouldn’t have a costume and couldn’t go trick or treating.

How resentful I was to have such a mean mom! *rolls eyes* Of course now I appreciate all the effort she put into it, but my current sensibilities mean that I’m REPULSED by the ‘pretty pink princess’ look.

((BTW, I was told once that it was incredibly rude to enter a giveaway if it was part of a blog party that you didn’t attend, hence why I haven’t entered yours despite wanting to. Was wondering if you felt the same way, or if I could finally enter for that gorgeous halloween/samhain/dia de los muertos giveaway you have going on….:( ))

It’s rude to tell people they are rude. lol Plus, unless the giveaway strictly states “for blog party members only” i say all is fair! more than likely, those who read the giveaway post are not necessarily part of the “blog party”. Lets say I host a giveaway as part of my blog party post, and i have 6 regular commenters.. maybe 2 run in the same circle as me and are part of the “party”.. the party gives me 5 new commenters that day. so out of 11 commenters only 7 are allowed to enter the giveaway? that’s plain silly to me! sorry had to vent.. off my soapbox now.. sorry Wendy for jumping in…

Leathra, let me say for my blog giveaways, never, ever do you have to be participating in a blog party. Whomever said that, needs to re-read the “Emily Post” version for blogs (hmmm, maybe that might be a good blog post) and they’ll know that’s insane! I’m glad you told me that because I’m going to post for my contest entries, that NO ONE has to be a participant for any blog post contest I have going. So, please consider yourself a definite contender for the giveaway!

And now that I think of it, maybe Tiffany didn’t want to be a pink princess and had to wear the same outfit the next year too! ; ) I bet you were beautiful though. And only true “Barbie-dolls” would dress on purpose as a “pink princess” if they were adults and you my friend, are definitely not a pink princess, you’re a goddess!

  6. Hey Wendy! Oh i feel for you! I went to a Christian school, so Halloween was a no-no, but we did have harvest festivals and only could dress up as bible based characters. So at school I went as Mary mother of baby Jesus. I had a sating blue gown that was my flower girl dress from a family friends wedding, wore my grandmas crochet shawl and had a baby doll i my hand. that was cool, but going trick or treating with my cousin and his friends that were all dressed up as actual costumes, everyone thought i looked silly!! why was i carrying my doll with me?? why was i wearing a shawl on my head?? oh man the looks i got from people on the block who knew nothing about bible characters!!
id love to be in the giveaway! gonna go do the rest of entries now!!

Just think Jolean, you can tell everybody you’re a rockin’ witch because you were the Mother of “God” when you were young ; ) If I saw a child dressed as “Mary”, I probably would be a bit baffled at first, but then maybe a light bulb would go on in my head. I think you should dress up one year as a wicked cool, Mary and have your husband be “Jesus.” Or better yet, instead of the Mother of Jesus, you can be “Mary Magdalene” and we all know the true story about her! Firstly, you, my new friend, are hilarious, what a great story. I am now a follower. Secondly…my Halloween costume horror story (my own fault mind you, I have tried to blame my mom for this and just can’t.) I know well The costume parade you speak of. I desperately wanted to be a gypsy for Halloween. A great costume, yes, but not when you are eight and weigh as much as a willow branch. I wore one of my moms old hippie skirts, and practically at the middle of the march, my skirt decides it is way to big and falls down. In front of the whole school. Wonder Woman panties just a-breezing in the wind. You can imagine the rest. Everyone, kids, teachers, parents laughing hysterically. So that’s my story. Haven’t thought about it in a while. Thanks for letting me share.

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Susie, thank you for becoming a follower and welcome to my blog. I would have died from embarrassment too if my skirt fell down. Really, Wonder Woman underwear? That’s pretty cool. You could have pretended you were REALLY Wonder Woman dressed in disguise as a hippy to fight the villains. ; ) So, maybe it’s time to reclaim Wonder Woman one year and come out blazing with full power! Glad you were amused by my story, as I said, I can laugh about it now ; ) And thank you for sharing!

  12. avatar D.Suplicki says:

If I had a least favorite costume as a kid, I have no one to blame but myself. My parents let me pick out what I wanted to be for Halloween when I started school. Almost all of my costumes growing up were hand made numbers assembled from clothes in my mom’s closet and accessories from the store or that we made. I went to school as Miss Piggy in kindergarten, but was too young to be picked on for my pink tutu, hideous bland wig and pig nose by kids who were dressed as boxes of cereal. ;) By the time I realized the costume was hideous it was 10 years later and I laughed about it.

Awwww, Miss Piggie, I bet you looked so cute. It would be a different story if you had to wear that when you were older. Boxes of cereal, how weird!!! I couldn’t even conceive of that for a child’s costume. Was your mom a good tailor? I’ve seen photos of my friends when they were little when their mom’s made their costumes and some of them were pretty awesome and some of them, I would shudder over.

  13. avatar Sus says:

OMG….your post made me laugh so hard…. I think most of us have these memories! You are a gifted story teller and your pictures were hysterical! That said, I think my worst Halloween memory was the year I “got” to be Casper the Friendly Ghost. The costume consisted of a plastic one piece outfit…. with a tie in the back… which was tight on my 6X chubber body….. and a plastic mask…with a small slit for the mouth and two small holes to breathe out of… WHO ever came up with that time saving idea???????

Love the blog and thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Sus, just think, we could have gone trick or treating together with you as “Casper” and me as “Wendy, the Good Little Witch” which I probably would have loved to be, but alas, no dice. Oh the torture and suffering that some children’s costumes are, right? ; ) Thanks for your wonderful comment and blogging about it.

  14. avatar TMCPhoto says:

I dressed as a zombie one year. My Mom had this pale blue evening gown with a cowl like hood that was lined in bright yellow. I don’t know where she got it but it was perfect for a zombie costume in 6th grade. I had my face painted up like a skull (looking at the pictures now I have to admit that it looked goofy but at the time I thought it was very cool) and I got to wear super long satiny gloves.

My worst costume would have to be the one I wore for my first 3 Halloweens, not that I was embarrassed by them but because for the life of me I can not tell what exactly I was supposed to be and my Mom can’t remember. It was one of those plastic smock costumes with the old style molded plastic mask which may or may not have had a duck’s beak on the forehead. You’ve got to love the early 70′s for uber style

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Oh I totally remember those odd looking plastic-y costumes. I was a child in the 70′s too and thank the Goddess I didn’t have to wear one, but Raggedy Ann came in close. I wanted to dress as “Marcia Brady” from the show “The Brady Bunch”, did you ever watch that? And you and your mom were way ahead of the time for dressing up as a Zombie that young! Zombies are the cool thing to be these last few years.

  17. avatar Treaya says:

For me it was the Garfield costume that I had to wear 2 years in a row. It was so hot and heavy. It had the big huge and heavy Garfield head and the tail dragged on the ground. It didn’t help that I had to wear it to school for Halloween and we would do a little Halloween parade around the neighborhood. I could barely see while I was walking and had to remember not trip on my tail.

Very cool outfit Angelica! I would love to see a picture of you and your husband. I love pin up clothing too. Some great rock a billy outfits out there.

Haha. I was in the same boat. As the tomboy though I thoroughly enjoyed all the wanna-be tiffany’s trying to get me to put in “a good word” with the boys I hung out with- every cloud has a silver lining. And I think there was a year all the mom’s everywhere decided that raggedy anne was the costume de jour, cause I got the treatment too. Luckily it was while I was still young enough that all I cared about was the candy.

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Monica, you have a good point, maybe the “Tiffany’s” of the world didn’t want to be Barbie Dolls! It’s so funny to read about how many of us were “Raggedy Anns!” And yes, I think the candy for me too that year made it somehow re-demptable. Still does ; )

I loved my costume, it was just one of those costumes from the 60′s, in a box with the plastic face mask that was hard to breathe in but it was Cinderella and I loved it. I stayed home with my great grandma while everyone went out. I put my costume on and sat around in it. My g grandma felt so bad for me that she bundled me up under my costume and took me over to a couple of the neighbors just so I could get out a little bit. I think we went to two houses, I really didn’t feel good, but I was so happy to get out even for a few minutes and take part in Halloween! Please enter me in your contest. LOVE the bracelet!

Hi Dawn, welcome. What a wonderful story about such a loving grandmother. I got sick one year too, I think it’s easier to get sick for children that time of the year because of the weather and all the flying germs. Some Halloweens, I used to have to wear a heavy coat over my costume, which totally detracted from the whole look. Really, really sweet story you shared. Thank you and you are entered!

  25. avatar Aelwyn says:

Oh wow….your Raggedy Anne costume wasn’t SO bad. There’s a photo of my sister and I winning a costume contest at Hallowe’en, and I have NO IDEA what we were. I think we were three or four, and had on Robin Hood style hats. My parents can’t even remember. I think we only won because we’re twins!

I’d say the funniest costume my sister and I did (as ALL costumes were home made) was the two headed monster thing. My mom painted a BIG box green, cut out two head holes. She attached smaller boxes with string to make a tail (it was pretty long and kept getting stepped on by other kids). We had our faces painted green, wore green turtlenecks and sweatpants, and our hair sprayed green.

One thing Mum didn’t think about—how we were going to sit in class! It was rather hysterical as the teacher tried to be professional and figure out a way to stick chairs under us at our table (we were in 2nd grade) so we didn’t have to sit on the floor (which would have been difficult with the tail).

We finally got it with putting two chairs facing each other, and sitting up very, very straight. And all the teachers in the elementary school we were in had to come in for a look!

I will always remember that box costume.

It was 1986, and all the other kids had those plastic smock costumes with the ugly formed plastic masks….and we had awesome boxes! :)

I have to say, I LOVE all the posts! This is truly awesome sharing. Oh, and I’m definitely entering your giveaway–I want that bracelet *stomps foot* :)

    Happy Samhain/Hallwe’en everyone!

Aelwyn, I can just see perfectly the costumes you and your sister wore, LOL! Thinking of being a robot reminds me of the one from the old t.v. show, “Lost In Space” which I loved when I was younger. So, do YOU have any photos, you’d care to show, Aelwyn? Would love to see one and thank you for the compliments about my posts. Yes, this bracelet is fun and would probably be easier to wear than a Robot costume ; )

  26. OMG! you poor girl! I hated raggety-F%$#@ing ann as a child and would have tortured her, if my mom had been so unwise as to have given me one!

I LOVE Mae West! though the quote that “gets” me ends in “Goodness had nothing to do with it dearie!”

anyway, being the hippy dippy, lets take a year off life go to woodstock with my 4yearold and follow the dead, sort of mom. i got to pick all my own costumes which were all hand made or hand-me-downs.
and because of that I was teased unmersifully for not being up-to date!
she found other ways to embarrass me, believe me!

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Flora, I think we would get along wonderfully. I love the expletives you used about R. Ann, lol…And that is a great Mae West quote. I think she also said, “I used to be Snow White, but then I drifted.” ; ) Hmmm, maybe I’ll go as Mae W. one year for Halloween. You must have seen some pretty interesting things with your mom! I’m surprised she didn’t name you something like “Sun Ray” or something other equally “hippy dippy”. Although, now names like that are really in vogue. And yes, children seem to pick on others no matter what they do or not. Now at least you and I can rock with Mae ; )

  27. avatar Kallan says:

I became a follower of your blog through Mrs. B :)

On to your post: Oh you poor baby.. I had a ‘Tiffany’ in school too AND I was that tom-boy as well. My fav costume was one my mom made me for a play I was in during 3rd grade.. it was a witch costume and it totally rocked.. I didn’t want to take it off!
It’s great that you can laugh now.. from an adult perspective, you did look adorable.

Hi Kallan, welcome : ) Why do tomboy girls never seem to find each other until they’re much older? I don’t play handball anymore, but I do like to get dirty still. So, what did your Witch costume look like? One would think, that my mother being a witch, I would get to dress up as one, but then again, nothing made sense with my mother. And thank you for saying I look “adorable”, I like that compliment now, but being cute back when I wanted to look pink and sparkly wouldn’t have cut it. I really want to see your witch costume!

  28. avatar Jeff Beazley says:

Am I allowed in here, or is it women only? Being a thorn among the roses appeals to me. Three things.

We didn’t do Halloween in Britain when I was a kid. It was just another date in the calendar. I had to go to the library to discover what it was about. So no dressing up for anybody.

I always greatly preferred tomboys to Tiffanys. They were much more intriguing.

I’m having fun drawing patterns with your sparklies.

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Hi Jeff! You are more a bumblebee than a thorn ; ) You’re always welcome here. As Lyn posted, Halloween isn’t celebrated in England the way it is here. I think people who live closer to the earth where you live and around the U.K. do celebrate a “truer” form of Samhain and Halloween than people who are blocked by industry and machines. Too bad I didn’t know you when Tiffany was ruling as only a “Tiffany” could : ) And draw away with the sparkles, and let me know if you’ve figured out a way to come up with a pattern.

  29. avatar Lyn says:

I don’t have a Halloween costume story to tell you. Halloween just wasn’t celebrated here in England like it is now. We used to do apple dunking and tell ghost stories but no dress up.

I ADORE the bracelet – so you must enter me through my lack of costume stories. And I promise Tabitha will never be a Raggedy Ann ;-) Lyn recently posted..O is for ObituaryMy Profile

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Lyn, of COURSE you don’t have to submit a horror halloween costume story to enter. I would love to hear more about Guy Fawkes day and other English traditions. Of course where you are, you’re much closer to the Pagan roots of Samhain than most are. And as for Miss. Tabitha, I would love to see photos of her. I have a feeling whatever she dressed up as, she would look darling.

  30. avatar Nydia says:

Oooh, poor you!! What a memory to have o such a cool holiday as a child. At least now you’re grown up and can dress up like whatever you want!;) But I think you looked so cute as the Ann doll.

Here in Brazil we don’t hve this holiday (actually some English courses do have Halloween parties, but it’s nota tradition going to the streets for treats or tricks.

Well, I can tell yuou that my favorite Carnival (this is very traditional here!) costume was a gypsy, although were not much into Carnival parades either!

Kisses from Nydia, direct from Mrs. B.’s!

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Hi Nydia, I have always wanted to go to a Brazilian Carnivale. I have a feeling that you’re much closer to the “dead” than we are here in the states. And I do hope you’ll post photos of you in the gypsy costume. I bet you looked gorgeous!

  31. avatar Birgit says:

    Hi Wendy,

And this time I can actually leave a comment. ;)

First of all, thanks for sharing your Halloween memory — you made me smile (okay, grin) this evening!

Before I forget it — YEAH for Theresa to win your last giveaway. I am so happy for her — she is such a dearheart.

I loved your email and will answer it as soon as I have some free time.

Anyway, no Halloween costume for this girl here… You might remember that I live in Germany, and Halloween was unheard of when I was a child. However, we have carnival. My favorite costumes were cowgirl and Native American girl. See a theme here? I can’t deny that I still have a soft spot for the Old West.

Anyway, more in an email — I don’t want to leave a whole novella as comment. Your fault, Wendy — just don’t write such interesting posts and offer such fabulous prizes. And — thanks for that, too!

    Hugs,
    Birgit

  33. Great story- I always tried to save my mom money by making costumes myself or having her sew them. I made one out of all her plastic bags (I was supposed to look like th hairy guy from Addams family). My favorite costume was a tutu my mom made and I wore it for months after halloween.

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Hi Kathryn, you sound like you were a really considerate child, unlike me by making your own costumes. I remember “Cousin It” from “The Adams Family”! Did anyone know who you were supposed to be? And I think I would have loved a tutu I could have worn after Halloween is over. There’s something very faery-like and magickal about little girls who wear tutu’s : )

Great giveaway and great story! I always had the handmade costumes (albeit only when I expressed how in this country they do Halloween in October, not Carneval in February…) so I was usually the weird kid with obviously hand made stuff. To add insult to injury, my mother would make me wear my bloody snow suit under it all! As if I needed my bright purple snow pants under my fringed brown skirt when I was trying to be Pochahontas? Noooooo

    How embaressing.

Thanks though for letting me vent :)

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Please Amanda, “vent” away, I love people when they really comment and share themselves : ) I used to have to wear a horrible coat over my costumes that I DID like and so totally understand about how wearing a jumpsuit kind of detracts from the look you wanted, lol…It’s so interesting that kids who’s mothers made them their costumes wanted a store bought costume whereas I would have loved my mother to make me a costume, unless it was another Raggedy Ann ; ) Thanks for your comment and glad you liked my post.

  36. Now as for my Memories of my Child hood costume. The most memorable costume for me is my vampire, dracula costume. I loved in New Brunswick at the time so I had to be 4 or 5. I have a photo of it. My dad gave me a white dress shirt, a black cape. put black make up around eyes and blood on my mouth. I looked awesome. Also just for mention, My sister is a pink bunny rabbit beside me in the picture. :)

    Oh old memories.

  37. avatar Melody Siracusa says:

I was 15, and my neighbour had given me a red halter necked jumpsuit she’d had a decade before (this was in the late 80s). I didn’t (and don’t) like jumpsuits, so I took out the inseam, and turned it into a dress. I then put a ‘vampire’ bite on my neck, and went to the town Halloween party. I won a prize for the sexiest costume, because everyone thought my vampire bite was a hickey!

I made my son’s costume a few years ago, and everyone complimented him on it. He was a Lego brick.

    • avatar Wendy S. says:

Oh Goddess, I remember those horrible 80′s jumpsuits! When I see people wearing them, I grimace to myself. You were really clever Melody, in making your costume into being a cool Vamp. Victim, I like that! And I would also love to see a picture of that. It sounds like you’re really talented in sewing etc…esp. with your sons costume. What a cute idea!

  38. avatar Shell says:

My favorite costume was being a Gypsy. I did it for three years.(But not back to back years.) I had a long dress and a cool tamborine I wear. It got so bad, that even my friends would plead for me to come as something else. I loved being a Gypsy, so I ignored them.

Shell, I also had a gypsy costume I wore when I was little and loved it. I never dressed like one as an “adult” but I think it would be a great costume. What gypsy magick did you create in your costume, what did you wear? And good for you to ignore your friends. Halloween is special and we need to love what we choose to incarnate as!

  39. Most memorable Halloween costume? Oh lord, that has to be the time I just dressed in black and wore an awesome velvet hooded cloak, and went around my neighborhood lurking in shadows, jumping and scaring the bejesus out of the other kids.

  41. avatar Susan G says:

Hey Wendy, I have been pondering all day how best to answer this! {sigh} For some reason I am drawing a blank on most of my Halloween’s. I love your post, and I do remember when I was starting to notice the difference between the “Tiffanys” and the “Susans”(or Wendys). It began in 6th grade, but really hit home in 7th grade when I entered Jr. high. Those last couple of years I remember doing MY OWN costumes, Ghost, Hobo(bum) and a hippie.(which was really just acting like those a bit older than I) I was born in 1960, so I am sure I have some years on you.

I can tell you, as a younger but not too young. we’d stay in our own development, after hitting the last house, come home, eat something, change into a different costume and go out again to the same houses…we had some neighbors that gave out candied apples, and caramel apples, popcorn balls and cans of Fresca!! (not to mention lots of good candy–of course we rec’d some plain apples also)

I’d love to put this on my sidebar for an extra, but you want me to blog about it. I can’t do it today I have a “schedule” for Thursdays. Can I do it after today?

I made my children’s costumes every year til they hit middle school and then let them choose what they wanted to be, and I would help, but they basically had it to make themselves what they wanted. I think the only costumes they didn’t like (the 2 younger ones) is when I made them into trolls (like the the “troll dolls”) at least they are the only ones they still bring up, LOL!
they are 23 and 24 now. The son (24) still wants to try to go trick or treating with his friends, and then go to parties LOL. The daughter likes to dress up and go to parties and visit haunted hayrides etc. My oldest daughter – 28 as far as I know has not dressed up for years…for a while she was a “fanatic” born-again-christian, and frowned upon Halloween. She isn’t like that anymore, but she is consumed with reading self-help books, and blaming her Dad and I & Step-dad and Step-mom for everything that is wrong in her life. We are basically estranged, we talk once in a while, sad–it breaks my heart…she doesn’t even speak with her siblings.
let me know if I can post about this later.

I have had some really fun costumes, but the one that comes to mind right now was a VERY BAD one.

I had asked my mom for a sparkly blue or purple cat costume. I was 14 or 15 at the time, and had in mind something probably a bit more on the sexy side than was exactly appropriate, but after I told her what I wanted, she said she understood and promised to make it.

The day before Halloween, the package with the costumes finally arrived. There was no time to come up with anything else.

What I pulled out of the box was a cat costume. It was not, however, blue, or purple, or sparkly, or the least bit sexy.

It was pink, and baggy, and made of fake fur. It was essentially footie pajamas made of pink fur, with ears and a tail. It looked quite a bit like a deformed easter bunny, actually.

That was the last time I did not make my own costume!
